As you and I know all too well, we’ve had an extremely intense several years on foreign policy. America is in a new place, where the world is looking at us with foreboding and confusion. And the American people are wondering what our global role should continue to be… if at all.
That’s why I’m excited to share my new book - “Saving Democratic Foreign Policy” - with you. In the book I share personal perspectives and policy prescriptions for the way forward. And as a Democrat, I believe that for us to lead again, we need to earn back the American people’s trust.
This book lays out a clear path for how to get there. One built on three pillars: pragmatism, patriotism, and populism. Deal with the world as it is. Love your country unapologetically. And never forget to ask: How does this help the worker in Toledo or the nurse in Tucson?
I never planned to write this book, but as I’ve watched Democrats miss an important opportunity – to show that foreign policy is a kitchen-table issue – it became clear that we had to find a way to bring the foreign policy conversation back to the heart of the party... especially if we hope to win future elections, the base requirement for obtaining power and the authority to lead.
I believe that we Democrats can still be the party that keeps America safe, prosperous, and respected. But first, Democrats have to win elections. And to win, we have to learn to talk about the world in a way that makes Americans feel proud, not anxious. With solutions, not despair. With vision, not anger. That’s how we’ll win again.
So I truly hope that you’ll have a chance to pick up “Saving Democratic Foreign Policy.” I’m thrilled to share the book with you. And in the coming days, I’ll be sharing with you ideas from the book about the way forward for our country - and for Democrats - on foreign policy.
