Now that this column has been superseded by the US air strikes on Saturday, it's time to make something clear: The US has made good on commitments to defend Israel from external threats.

Since the Oct. 7th attacks, we have provided arms and other support during campaigns in Gaza, Lebanon, and Yemen; coordinated effective air defense against Iranian missile barrages; and now attacked Iranian nuclear sites.

Given this record, it's high time the US BALANCED its approach to the region through a robust campaign of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, and an insistence that Israel stop encroaching on the West Bank. West Bank Arabs have not attacked Israel in any seriously threatening manner, if at all, since Oct. 7th. Yet Israel continues to tighten control there and authorize expanded settlement activity.

Since 1947, the United States has supported the partition of Palestine and the survival of a Jewish state in the face of hostile neighbors. Now that each of those neighbors has sustained defeat, and Israel displays astounding military prowess, justice demands that we maintain our support for the sharing of Palestine and self-determination for its peoples.
